In the 2001–02 season, Michael Owen was Liverpool’s star striker, continuing to build on his reputation as one of the most lethal forwards in world football. Fresh off winning the 2001 Ballon d’Or for his performances in Liverpool’s treble-winning campaign, Owen remained a key player under Gérard Houllier.
